Painting and Decorating Tips and Help

Tips for painting and decorating:

Preparation:

  • Clean the surfaces: Remove any dirt, dust, cobwebs, or grease with warm soapy water.
  • Fill holes and cracks: Use filler to repair any imperfections in the walls or woodwork.
  • Sand: Lightly sand any rough or glossy surfaces to ensure the paint adheres properly.
  • Cover floors and furniture: Protect your floors and furniture with drop cloths or dust sheets.
  • Mask off areas: Use masking tape to protect areas you don't want to paint, such as skirting boards, windows, and ceilings.

Painting:

  • Start with the ceiling: Paint the ceiling first to avoid drips onto the walls.
  • Cut in the edges: Use a brush to paint the edges of the walls and ceiling, as well as around windows and doors.
  • Roll the walls: Use a roller to cover the main areas of the walls with paint.
  • Paint the woodwork: Paint the skirting boards, doors, and window frames last.
  • Clean your brushes and rollers: Wash your brushes and rollers thoroughly with warm soapy water after use.

Additional tips:

  • Use a good quality paint: A good quality paint will give you a better finish and last longer. We recommend and Designer paint like Farrow and Ball or Fenwick & Tilbrook
  • Apply the paint evenly: Don't overload your brush or roller with paint.
  • Allow the paint to dry properly: Don't apply a second coat of paint until the first coat is completely dry.
  • Ventilate the room: Open windows and doors to allow fresh air to circulate while you are painting.
  • Clean up any spills immediately: Spills can be difficult to remove once the paint has dried.
